This unit extends the to-infinitive to structures with an object: I want you to help. Some verbs (want, expect, would like…) can be used with or without an object. Others (tell, warn, advise, allow…) always need an object. And two very common verbs — make and let — use the bare infinitive (without to), although the passive of make requires to.

Cette unité étend l’infinitif en to aux structures avec un objet : I want you to help. Certains verbes (want, expect, would like…) peuvent être utilisés avec ou sans objet. D’autres (tell, warn, advise, allow…) nécessitent toujours un objet. Deux verbes courants — make et let — utilisent l’infinitif sans to, mais le passif de make requiert to.

What is the difference between make and let?Quelle est la différence entre make et let ?

Make somebody do = cause or force: She made me apologise. Let somebody do = allow or permit: She let me leave early. Both use the bare infinitive in the active form.

Why does “be made to do” use “to” when “make somebody do” doesn’t?Pourquoi “be made to do” utilise-t-il “to” alors que “make somebody do” n’en utilise pas ?

Active: They made us wait (bare infinitive). Passive: We were made to wait (to-infinitive). The ‘to’ reappears in the passive — simply memorise this asymmetry.
