Some verbs in English are always followed by the -ing form (gerund), never by to + infinitive. The most common are enjoy, mind and suggest. This unit covers all of them, plus important phrasal verbs and special structures.

The negative form is not -ing:

= stop (permanently)

= delay until later

Don’t put off telling him.
go on / carry on
= continue

She wants to go on working.
keep / keep on
= do repeatedly

Having Done — Finished Actions

Having Done — Actions passées finies

To refer to a finished past action, use having done — but the simple -ing form is equally correct and more common:

Pour une action passée finie, on peut utiliser having done — mais la forme -ing simple est aussi correcte et plus courante :

They admitted having stolen the money. = They admitted stealing the money.
I now regret having said that. = I now regret saying that.

Other Structures: admit / deny / suggest / recommend + that-clause

They denied doing anything wrong. = They denied (that) they had done anything wrong.
Chris suggested going to the cinema. = Chris suggested (that) we go to the cinema.
I recommend travelling by train. = I recommend (that) you travel by train.
