In English, there is/are is used to say that something exists or to introduce it for the first time. It is refers to a specific thing, place, fact or situation that is already known. French learners often confuse these because French uses il y a for “there is/are” but c’est/il est for “it is” — each with different rules.

En anglais, there is/are sert à dire que quelque chose existe ou à le mentionner pour la première fois. It is se réfère à une chose, un lieu, un fait ou une situation déjà connu(e). Les francophones confondent souvent ces formes car le français utilise il y a pour “there is/are” mais c’est/il est pour “it is”.
