Frequently Asked Questions — the 1

Questions Fréquentes — the 1

Why ‘the cinema’ but just ‘TV’? Pourquoi ‘the cinema’ mais juste ‘TV’ ?

These are fixed conventions in English. We say go to the cinema, go to the theatre, and listen to the radio — all with the. But watch TV has no article. When you refer to the physical TV set in a room, you say turn off the television. Just learn these as fixed expressions.

Ce sont des conventions figées en anglais. On dit go to the cinema, go to the theatre, et listen to the radio — tous avec the.

Why ‘in space’ but ‘the moon’? Pourquoi ‘in space’ mais ‘the moon’ ?

Space (= the universe / outer space) has no article: travel in space, millions of stars in space. But specific bodies have the: the moon, the sun, the earth. When Earth is named as a planet alongside Mars, Jupiter etc., use Earth without the.

Space (= l’univers / l’espace cosmique) n’a pas d’article : travel in space. Mais les astres spécifiques prennent the : the moon, the sun, the earth.

When do meals need an article? Quand les repas nécessitent-ils un article ?

Meals normally have no article: have breakfast, at lunch, after dinner. When you add an adjective, use a/an: a big lunch, a wonderful dinner, an early breakfast. You never use the with meals.

Quand on ajoute un adjectif, on utilise a/an : a big lunch, a wonderful dinner, an early breakfast. On n’utilise jamais the avec les repas.

Why no ‘the’ before platform 5 or size 43?

When a number is attached, it already identifies the specific item — no article is needed. Say platform 5 (not the platform 5), room 126, page 29, size 43, gate B, vitamin C. Think of it like a name — you don’t say the John.

Dites platform 5 (pas the platform 5), room 126, page 29, size 43.
