When a question is embedded inside a longer sentence, the word order changes to normal statement order — no inversion, no do/does/did. The same applies to reported questions.

Quand une question est enchâssée dans une phrase plus longue, l’ordre des mots redevient celui d’une affirmation — pas d’inversion, pas de do/does/did. Même règle pour les questions rapportées.

A

Do you know where …? — Embedded questions

Do you know where …? — Questions enchâssées

Inside a longer sentence, use normal statement order. Do/does/did disappears.

À l’intérieur d’une phrase plus longue, utilisez l’ordre normal d’une affirmation. Do/does/did disparaît.

Direct question ❓

Question directe ❓

What time is it?
Who are those people?
What time does the film start?
What do you mean?
Why did she leave early?

Embedded (normal order) ✓

Enchâssée (ordre normal) ✓

Do you know what time it is?
I don’t know who those people are.
Do you know what time the film starts?
Please explain what you mean.
I wonder why she left early.
⚠️
Common mistake: Say Do you know what time the film starts? NOT … does the film start? Erreur fréquente : Dites Do you know what time the film starts? PAS … does the film start?

When there is no question word, use if or whether:

Quand il n’y a pas de mot interrogatif, utilisez if ou whether :

Did anybody see you? → I don’t know if anybody saw me.
Is he coming? → Do you know if / whether he is coming?

B

He asked me where … — Reported questions

He asked me where … — Questions rapportées

Same normal word order. Verb usually backshifts. Use if / whether for yes/no questions.

Même ordre normal. Le verbe passe au passé. Utilisez if / whether pour les questions oui/non.

📌

Frequently Asked Questions — Unit 50

Questions fréquentes — Unité 50

When embedded, the question becomes a noun clause and uses statement word order: I don’t know where he is (not where is he). The auxiliary do/does/did also disappears.

Quand elle est enchâssée, la question devient une proposition nominale et utilise l’ordre d’une affirmation : I don’t know where he is (pas where is he). L’auxiliaire do/does/did disparaît aussi.

In most contexts they are interchangeable. Whether is slightly more formal. Use either only when there is no question word (what, why, where etc.).

Dans la plupart des contextes, ils sont interchangeables. Whether est légèrement plus formel. On les utilise seulement quand il n’y a pas de mot interrogatif.

Usually yes, but if the situation is still true or current, you can keep the original tense: She asked where you live (if you still live there).

Généralement oui, mais si la situation est toujours vraie, on peut garder le temps d’origine.

Do you know where he is? (outer sentence = question ✓) vs I don’t know where he is. (outer = statement ✓). The punctuation follows the outer sentence, not the embedded clause.

La ponctuation suit la phrase principale, pas la proposition enchâssée.
