Forming correct questions in English requires inverting the subject and first auxiliary. For present and past simple, add do/does/did. But when who/what is the subject, no inversion is needed. Prepositions go at the end, and negative questions express surprise or seek agreement.

A

Question word order — auxiliary before subject

Ordre des mots — auxiliaire avant le sujet

Tom willWill Tom be here tomorrow?

Use do/does for present simple and did for past simple — but only when who/what is the object. If who/what is the subject, no auxiliary is needed: Who phoned you? vs Who did you phone?

Utilisez do/does au présent simple et did au passé simple — mais seulement quand who/what est le complément. Si who/what est le sujet, pas d’auxiliaire : Who phoned you? vs Who did you phone?

Who is the subject — it replaces ‘somebody’ in Somebody phoned Emma. When the question word is the subject, use normal statement order with no auxiliary.

A negative question starts with a negative auxiliary: Didn’t you hear? A tag question is added at the end with the opposite polarity: You heard, didn’t you?

You heard, didn’t you?
