Units 1 and 2 introduced the present continuous and present simple separately. In this unit we compare them directly. The key question is always: Is this action in progress right now / around now? (→ continuous) or Is this a general truth, habit, or permanent situation? (→ simple). We also look at the important difference between I always do (routine) and I'm always doing (annoying habit).

(→ simple). Nous étudions aussi la différence entre I always do (routine) et I'm always doing (habitude agaçante).

A

In Progress (Continuous) vs General / Repeated (Simple)

En cours (continu) vs Général / Répété (simple)

The present continuous describes things happening at or around the time of speaking — the action is not yet complete. The present simple describes things that are generally true or happen repeatedly.

Continuous: action in progress now / around now — not complete
Simple: general truth / habit / repeated action

Do you speak English?
It doesn't rain much in summer.
I always get hungry in the afternoon.
Most people learn to swim as children.
The population increases by 200,000 per day.

C

I Always Do vs I'm Always Doing — An Important Difference

I Always Do vs I'm Always Doing — Une différence importante

I always do something = I do it every time, as a regular habit.  •  I'm always doing something = I do it too often or more often than normal — often used to express irritation or criticism.

I always go to work by car. (routine — use simple)
I'm always losing my keys. (too often — use continuous = irritation)
I've lost my keys again. I'm always losing them.
→ I lose them too often — more than normal. (criticism of oneself)
(autocritique)
Paul is never satisfied. He's always complaining.
→ He complains too much — expressing irritation about his habit.
You're always looking at your phone. Don't you have anything else to do?
→ Criticism — you do it too often.
→ Critique — tu le fais trop souvent.
⚠️
Remember: À retenir : "I always go to work by car" (simple) = routine. "I'm always going to work by car" ✗ — this would mean you go by car annoyingly often, which doesn't make sense here. Use always + continuous only when you want to express that something happens too often. "I always go to work by car" (simple) = routine.
