The present continuous tense (also called the present progressive) is one of the first tenses English learners encounter — and one of the most frequently used. Formed with am / is / are + verb-ing, the present continuous in English describes actions currently in progress, temporary situations, and ongoing changes. In this lesson you will master 4 essential rules for using the present continuous correctly, with annotated examples and self-correcting exercises. Present Continuous for Actions Happening Right Now at the Moment of Speaking

Présent continu pour les actions se passant en ce moment même

We use the present continuous when an action is happening at the exact moment of speaking. The action has started but is not yet finished.

On utilise le présent continu quand une action se passe au moment précis où l'on parle. L'action a commencé mais n'est pas encore terminée.

am / is / are + verb + -ing
I am driving  ·  She is working  ·  They are waiting
Please don't make so much noise. I'm trying to work.
→ I am trying right now, at this moment. (not I try)
→ J'essaie en ce moment même. (pas I try)
'Where's Mark?' 'He's having a shower.'
→ He is in the shower at this moment. (not He has a shower)
→ Il est sous la douche en ce moment. (pas He has a shower)
Let's go out now. It isn't raining any more.
→ The rain stopped — present continuous confirms the current state.
→ La pluie s'est arrêtée — le présent continu confirme l'état actuel.
How's your new job? Are you enjoying it?
→ Are you enjoying it right now, in this period of your life?
→ En profitez-vous en ce moment, dans cette période de votre vie ?

B

Present Continuous for Ongoing Actions — Started but Not Yet Finished

Présent continu pour les actions en cours — commencées mais pas encore finies

We also use the present continuous when an action has started but is not yet finished — even if we are not doing it at the exact moment of speaking. We are in the middle of it during this period.

On utilise aussi le présent continu quand une action a commencé mais n'est pas encore terminée — même si on n'est pas en train de la faire à cet instant précis. On est en plein milieu de cette action pendant cette période.

I am doing something = I started it and I haven't finished → I'm in the middle of it
Kate wants to work in Italy, so she's learning Italian.
→ She's not necessarily studying Italian right this second, but she's in the process of learning it.
→ Elle n'est pas forcément en train d'étudier l'italien à cet instant, mais elle est en cours d'apprentissage.
Some friends of mine are building their own house. They hope to finish it next summer.
→ The building process is ongoing — it started, it hasn't finished.
→ Le processus de construction est en cours — il a commencé, il n'est pas terminé.
'I'm reading a really good book at the moment.'
→ He has started the book but not yet finished it. He's in the middle of reading it.
→ Il a commencé le livre mais ne l'a pas encore terminé. Il est en train de le lire.

Present Continuous for Temporary Situations — Today, This Week, This Year

Présent continu pour les situations temporaires — today, this week, this year

We use the present continuous with time expressions like today, this week, this year, at the moment to describe temporary situations happening around the present — even if they are not happening at the exact moment of speaking.

On utilise le présent continu avec des expressions temporelles comme today, this week, this year, at the moment pour décrire des situations temporaires qui se passent autour du présent — même si elles ne se passent pas à cet instant précis.

Present Continuous for Changing Situations and Developing Trends

Présent continu pour les situations en évolution et les tendances

We use the present continuous when a change has started to happen. The following verbs are commonly used this way to describe something in the process of changing:

On utilise le présent continu quand un changement a commencé à se produire. Les verbes suivants sont couramment utilisés ainsi pour décrire quelque chose en train de changer :

getting · becoming · changing · improving · starting · beginning
increasing · rising · falling · growing · getting better/worse
Is your English getting better?
→ The improvement is in progress now. (not Does your English get better?)
→ L'amélioration est en cours. (pas Does your English get better?)
The population of the world is increasing very fast.
→ The change is currently in progress. (not increases)
→ Le changement est actuellement en cours. (pas increases)
At first I didn't like my job, but I'm starting to enjoy it now.
→ A new feeling is developing. (not I start)

Stative verbs — not used in the present continuous: Verbes d'état — jamais au présent continu : know, like, want, need, prefer, believe, understand, remember, mean, belong, seem, contain, have (possession). The present continuous (also called the present progressive) is formed with am / is / are + verb-ing. It expresses actions in progress right now, ongoing situations, temporary states around the present, and developing trends. Example: She is working from home this week.
