Three prepositions — in, at, and on — are used for physical position in English. The key is knowing whether you are describing something inside an enclosed space (in), at a specific point or location (at), or on a surface (on). When you swim in the sea, you are inside the water (enclosed/surrounded) → in. When you sit on the beach, you are on the surface of the sand → on. The key is whether you are surrounded/enclosed (in) or resting on a surface (on).
Quand vous nagez dans la mer, vous êtes à l’intérieur de l’eau (entouré) → in. Quand vous êtes assis sur la plage, vous êtes sur la surface du sable → on. La clé est de savoir si vous êtes entouré (in) ou posé sur une surface (on).
Both are used, but at reception is more common in British English. At reception treats the reception desk as a functional point/location (where an activity happens). In reception focuses on the physical space (the reception area of a building). Both are correct.
