In English we have two main patterns for if-sentences about the present and future. We use if + present → will when something is possible or likely. We use if + past → would when something is imagined, hypothetical, or we don't expect it to happen. The past form does not mean past time — it signals that the situation is unreal or unlikely.
On utilise if + présent → will quand quelque chose est possible ou probable.

If we take the bus, it will be cheaper. (it's possible we'll take the bus)
Unreal / Hypothetical: If + past simple … , … would + base verb
If we took the bus, it would be cheaper. (we're not going to take the bus)
If + present → will (real/possible)
If + présent → will (réel/possible)
If + past → would (unreal/hypothetical)
If + passé → would (irréel/hypothétique)
If + Past = Unreal / Hypothetical — NOT Past Time
If + Passé = Irréel / Hypothétique — PAS le passé temporel
When we use if + past simple in a hypothetical conditional, the meaning is not past. The past form signals that the situation is imagined or unlikely right now.
No Would in the If-Clause + Could and Might
Pas de Would dans la Subordonnée en If + Could et Might
