Frequently Asked Questions — even

Questions fréquentes — even

No. Even alone cannot introduce a subject+verb clause. You need even though / even when / even if: ✓ Even though I was tired, I came.Even I was tired, I came.

Non. Even seul ne peut pas introduire une proposition sujet+verbe. Il faut even though / even when / even if.

Even though = introducing a fact: Even though she can’t drive, she has a car. (She really can’t drive.) Even if = hypothetical: It’s dangerous even if you’re a strong swimmer. (Maybe you are, maybe not.)

Even though = introduit un fait réel. Even if = introduit une hypothèse.

Even + comparative = “to an even greater degree”: It was cold, but today it’s even colder. Use -er for short adjectives, even more + adjective for long ones.

Even + comparatif = “dans une mesure encore plus grande” : even colder, even more interesting.

With if, the condition matters: We won’t go if it rains. With even if, the outcome doesn’t change regardless: We’re going even if it rains.

Avec if, la condition compte. Avec even if, le résultat est le même quoi qu’il arrive.
