The key differences: each can be used for two or more things and can appear in mid-position; every is used for three or more and cannot follow a pronoun. Only every is used in time expressions and near-universal statements.

Frequently Asked Questions — Each and Every

Questions fréquentes — Each et Every

Often there is little difference: Each / Every player wants to win. The key differences: (1) each can be used for two things; every is only for three or more. (2) each can appear in mid-position (We each had an idea); every cannot. (3) each of exists; every of does NOT. (4) Only every is used in time expressions and with every other.

(3) each of existe ; every of n’existe PAS.

No. “Every of” does not exist in English. Use each of them or every one of them instead. ✗ Every of them passed. Each of them passed.Every one of them passed.

Non. “Every of” n’existe pas en anglais. Utilisez each of them ou every one of them à la place.

Every other = every second one. I take a day off every other week. (= week 1 off, week 2 work, week 3 off…) Do not confuse with each other, which is a reciprocal pronoun: They love each other. (= he loves her and she loves him)

Every other = un sur deux. Ne pas confondre avec each other qui est un pronom réciproque.

Because they refer to items one at a time. ✓ Every student has a textbook. Each of the players was given a medal. Even though many students or players are involved, the focus is on each individual one.

✓ Every student has a textbook. Each player was given a medal.

Yes! This is one of the key differences. Each can be used for two or more: She had a bag in each hand. (two hands) There were plants on each side of the path. (two sides) Every is only used for three or more.

Oui !
