All, every and whole are closely related but follow different rules. We say everybody was happy — not “all were happy”. We say the whole book (countable noun) but all the money (uncountable noun). We use every day for frequency but all day for the complete day from beginning to end.

All, every et whole sont étroitement liés mais suivent des règles différentes. On dit everybody was happy — pas “all were happy”. On dit the whole book (nom dénombrable) mais all the money (nom indénombrable). On utilise every day pour la fréquence mais all day pour toute la journée du début à la fin.

B

whole and all — Countable vs Uncountable

whole et all — Dénombrable vs Indénombrable

Whole = complete, entire. Use it mainly with singular countable nouns. Always put the / my / a before whole. Do not use whole with uncountable nouns like money, water, information — use all the instead.

Whole = complet, entier. Utilisez-le principalement avec des noms singuliers dénombrables. Mettez toujours the / my / a avant whole. N’utilisez pas whole avec des noms indénombrables comme money, water, information — utilisez all the à la place.

✓ whole + singular countable noun

✓ whole + nom singulier dénombrable

Always: the / my / a + whole + noun
Toujours : the / my / a + whole + nom
Did you read the whole book? ✓
Emily lived her whole life in Paris. ✓
He ate a whole packet of biscuits. ✓
The whole team played brilliantly. ✓

✓ all the + uncountable noun

✓ all the + nom indénombrable

Never use whole with uncountable nouns:
Jamais whole avec les noms indénombrables :
all the money ✓  ·  the whole money
all the information ✓  ·  the whole information
all the furniture ✓  ·  the whole furniture
all the luggage ✓  ·  the whole luggage
💡
The key rule:La règle clé : I read the whole book. (book = countable → whole)  BUT  I read all the information. (information = uncountable → all the) I read the whole book. (book = dénombrable → whole)  MAIS  I read all the information. (information = indénombrable → all the)

C

every day / all day / the whole day

every day / all day / the whole day

Use every to say how often something happens (frequency). Use all day or the whole day for the complete day from beginning to end. Note: say all day and all weekNOT “all the day” or “all the week”.

Utilisez every pour dire à quelle fréquence quelque chose se passe. Utilisez all day ou the whole day pour toute la journée du début à la fin. Note : on dit all day et all weekPAS “all the day” ou “all the week”.

every = frequency (how often?)

every = fréquence (à quelle fréquence ?)

We went to the beach every day.
There’s a bus every ten minutes.
We meet about every six months.
Every time I see you, you look different.

all day / whole day = complete period

all day / whole day = période complète

We spent all day on the beach. ✓
We spent the whole day at the beach. ✓
all week ✓  ·  all the week
all the time = always, continuously
📌
all the time vs every time:all the time vs every time : “They’re at home all the time.” (= always, continuously)  ·  “Every time I see you, you look different.” (= on each occasion) “They’re at home all the time.” (= toujours, en permanence)  ·  “Every time I see you, you look different.” (à chaque occasion)
