This unit completes the adjective + preposition series. Two large groups: adjectives followed by of (afraid, proud, ashamed, jealous, aware, capable, full, typical…) and adjectives followed by other prepositions — at (good, bad), to (married, similar), from (different), in (interested), on (keen, dependent), with (crowded) and for (famous, responsible).

Questions fréquentes — Adjectif + préposition 2

Skill/ability adjectives (good, bad, brilliant, hopeless, terrible) always take at in English: good at maths, hopeless at cooking. ✗ good in maths is a very common French-influenced error.

Les adjectifs de compétence prennent toujours at en anglais. ✗ good in maths est une erreur fréquente due à l’influence du français.

Married to somebody = identifies your spouse: She is married to a doctor. Married with children = married and has children. These have completely different meanings!

Married to somebody = identifie votre conjoint. Married with children = marié et a des enfants. Ce sont des sens complètement différents !

Both are correct in British English. Different from is the most widely accepted. Different to is also correct in British English. In American English, different than is also common.

Les deux sont corrects en anglais britannique. Different from est le plus répandu. Different to est aussi correct.

Both describe a place containing many things/people, but use different prepositions: crowded with people vs full of people. ✗ crowded of and ✗ full with are both wrong.
