The particles on and off are opposites in many contexts: a machine is either on or off, you put on a coat or take it off, an event goes on or is called off. Mastering these contrasting pairs — and the fixed expressions that don’t follow an obvious pattern — is the goal of this unit.

Use on to mean a device is working or activated. Use off to mean it has stopped. Use turn or switch to change the state:

turn on/off = switch on/off: Both are interchangeable for most appliances. Put on is used specifically for music, a song, or the kettle. You put music on, but you turn/switch the TV on. turn on/off = switch on/off : Les deux sont interchangeables pour la plupart des appareils. Put on s’utilise spécifiquement pour la musique, une chanson ou la bouilloire.

put on weight is a fixed expression meaning to become heavier (gain weight). The opposite is lose weight. Note: you cannot say take off weight — the correct expression is lose weight. put on weight est une expression fixe signifiant grossir. Le contraire est lose weight.
