Some quantifiers go only with uncountable nouns (much, little), some only with plural countable nouns (many, few), and some work with both (a lot of, lots of, plenty of). A further distinction: little and few (without “a”) suggest a negative meaning — not enough — while a little and a few (with “a”) suggest a positive meaning — some, enough.

Certains quantifieurs s’utilisent uniquement avec des noms indénombrables (much, little), d’autres uniquement avec des noms pluriels dénombrables (many, few), et certains avec les deux (a lot of, lots of, plenty of). De plus, little et few (sans “a”) ont un sens négatif — pas assez — tandis que a little et a few (avec “a”) ont un sens positif — quelques-uns, suffisant.

Frequently Asked Questions — much, many, little, few

Questions fréquentes — much, many, little, few

Much is used with uncountable nouns: much money, much time. Many is used with plural countable nouns: many people, many years. When in doubt in a positive sentence, use a lot of — it works with both.

Much s’utilise avec les indénombrables, many avec les pluriels. En cas de doute dans une phrase affirmative, utilisez a lot of.

In spoken English, much in a positive sentence sounds very formal: She has much experience. Use a lot of: ✓ She has a lot of experience. However, much is fine in negatives, questions, and with too/so/as much.

À l’oral, much dans une affirmative sonne très formel. Utilisez a lot of. Mais much est correct dans les négatives, questions, et avec too/so/as much.

Without ‘a’: negative — He has few friends = not many (less than he’d like). With ‘a’: positive — He has a few friends = some (enough). Simple rule: a few/a little = “some” · few/little = “not enough”.

Sans ‘a’ : négatif (pas assez). Avec ‘a’ : positif (quelques, suffisant).

A lot of is neutral — a large amount or number. Plenty of means more than enough: ✓ We’ve got plenty of time — no need to rush.

A lot of est neutre. Plenty of signifie spécifiquement plus que suffisant.

With time words like years, weeks, days, months, English strongly prefers many: ✓ We’ve lived here for many years.

Avec les mots de temps comme years, weeks, days, l’anglais préfère nettement many.
