In English, nouns are either countable (you can count them: one banana, two bananas) or uncountable (no plural, no number: rice, music, water). This distinction controls which determiners and quantifiers you can use — a/an, many/much, few/little, and more.

You can use a/an with singular countable nouns. You cannot use a/an with uncountable nouns. You cannot use a singular countable noun alone (without a/the/my etc.).
