We use may and might to talk about possibility — things that are perhaps true or perhaps will happen. They are interchangeable in most cases. For the past, we use may have or might have. In this unit we also compare them with could (similar meaning) and explain why couldn't is very different from might not.

Pour le passé, on utilise may have ou might have. Dans cette unité, on les compare aussi avec could (sens similaire) et on explique pourquoi couldn't est très différent de might not.

A

May / Might — Possibility in the Present & Future

May / Might — Possibilité au présent et au futur

We use may or might to say that something is possible — perhaps it is true, or perhaps it will happen. You can use either one: they mean the same thing in most situations. The negative forms are may not and might not.

Les formes négatives sont may not et might not.

Subject + may / might (not) + base verb
It may be true. / It might be true. (= perhaps it is true)
It may not be true. / She might not know. (= perhaps not)

May / Might — Positive Possibility

May / Might — Possibilité positive

perhaps it IS true / will happen
c'est peut-être vrai / va se passer
He may be in his office. (= perhaps he is)
He might be having lunch. (= perhaps he is)
Ask Kate. She might know. (= perhaps she knows)
It may be true. = It might be true.
She may have a sister. (= perhaps she has)

May Not / Might Not — Negative Possibility

May Not / Might Not — Possibilité négative

perhaps it is NOT true / will NOT happen
It may not be true. (= perhaps it isn't)
She might not know. (= perhaps she doesn't)
He might not be available. (= perhaps he isn't)
I'll try, but it may not be possible.

May be vs Maybe:May be vs Maybe : Don't confuse may be (2 words: modal + verb) with maybe (1 word = perhaps, adverb). ✓ It may be true.  ·  ✓ 'Is it true?' 'Maybe. I'm not sure.' Ne confondez pas may be (2 mots : modal + verbe) avec maybe (1 mot = peut-être, adverbe). ✓ It may be true.  ·  ✓ 'C'est vrai ?' 'Maybe. Je ne suis pas sûr.'

B

May Have / Might Have — Possibility in the Past

May Have / Might Have — Possibilité dans le passé

For past possibility, we use may have or might have + past participle. These mean perhaps something happened / was true in the past.

Pour la possibilité passée, on utilise may have ou might have + participe passé.

Subject + may / might (not) have + past participle
She may have been asleep. (= perhaps she was asleep)
You might have left it at work. (= perhaps you left it there)
She might not have known about it. (= perhaps she didn't know)
'I wonder why Kate didn't answer her phone.' 'She may have been asleep.'
→ perhaps she was asleep (past possibility)
→ peut-être qu'elle dormait (possibilité passée)
'I can't find my phone anywhere.' 'You might have left it at work.'
→ perhaps you left it there (past possibility)
→ peut-être que tu l'as laissé là-bas
'Why wasn't Amy at the meeting?' 'She might not have known about it.'
→ perhaps she didn't know (negative past possibility)
'Why was David in such a bad mood?' 'He may not have been feeling well.'
→ perhaps he wasn't feeling well (negative past continuous possibility)

C

Could (Similar) vs Couldn't (Very Different from Might Not)

Could (similaire) vs Couldn't (très différent de Might Not)

Could is similar to may and might for possibility. But couldn't (negative) is very different from may not / might not.

Could est similaire à may et might pour la possibilité. Mais couldn't (négatif) est très différent de may not / might not.

Could / Could Have — Possible (similar to may/might)

Could / Could Have — Possible (similaire à may/might)

it IS possible
c'EST possible
It's a strange story, but it could be true.
= it may be / might be true
You could have left your phone at work.
= you might have left it there

Couldn't Have ≠ Might Not Have (BIG difference!)

Couldn't Have ≠ Might Not Have (GRANDE différence !)

couldn't have = IMPOSSIBLE / might not have = perhaps not
couldn't have = IMPOSSIBLE / might not have = peut-être pas
Sarah couldn't have received it — otherwise she'd have replied. (= IMPOSSIBLE)
I suppose she might not have received it. (= perhaps she didn't — but perhaps she did)
⚠️
Key contrast:Contraste clé : Couldn't have = it was IMPOSSIBLE (Unit 28 deduction). Might not have = perhaps it didn't happen — we're not sure either way. Don't confuse them. Couldn't have = c'était IMPOSSIBLE (déduction de l'unité 28). Might not have = peut-être que ça ne s'est pas passé — on n'est pas sûr dans un sens ou dans l'autre.
